MISTER DREAM

MISTER DREAM
I feel like I’m looking through a movie screen
Some fractured actor from a Hollywood scene
Keep telling myself I’m standing up
But the script says I’m sitting, reading ‘open’ for ‘shut’

Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!

My clothes don’t fit and my money’s wrong
Got a heart trace pattern says I’m dead and gone
The phone is ringing and there’s no-one there
And there’s a notice on my head saying: “Buyer Beware!”

Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!

And it’s a strange day they gave me
I said “Alright, but you must pay me.”
And they did
I thought “Good!”
But then they owned my “shouldn’t” and “should”

Now it’s a cold old rainy night again
My enemies are better than my fair-weather friends
Got a lucky charm keyring I found in the road
But my Flower Power meter’s still reading overload

Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!

They wrote up my name and then they crossed it out
So I’ll just stay here shut inside my house
Looking at a picture of where I ought to be
But anybody will do, it don’t have to be me

Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!
Do-wah do-wah do-wah!

And it’s a strange day they gave me
I said “Alright, but you must pay me.”
And they did
I thought “Good!”
But then they owned my “shouldn’t” and “should”

And it’s a strange day they gave me
I said “Alright, but you must pay me.”
And they did
I thought “Good!”
But then they owned my “shouldn’t” and “should”

Fun Facts:

  • The lyrics for Mister Dream were written during Alien Heat days and Pete and George wrote the basic riffs and arrangement in George’s bedsit in Haldon Road, Exeter, in around March of 1990.
  • Alien Heat never really did anything with this song.
  • The guitar parts are all played on Nicodemus.
  • Pete drew inspiration for this song from the films of James Dean.
  • This song is in the key of Dm and the tempo is 138BPM.
  • The vintage Akai S900 sampler is very busy in this song, although mostly by accident.
  • The parts it plays were all originally meant for other instruments, but worked so well on the S900’s basic tone program when the omni MIDI was left on by accident one time that Dark Company decided to just run with it.
  • When baby Tessa was 10 months old she heard this song as it was being prodded in the Wud Records studios and said “Doowadu!”, which came to mean ‘music’ in her special baby language.
  • Andy created a harmony when Dark Company were performing live in 1994 that Pete was reluctant to reproduce, but eventually did nevertheless.
  • Some of the guitar in the chorus George stole from a piece he composed in 1982 called 281281, which never saw the light of day.
  • The off-beat bass groove was Jeff’s creation.
