TRAVELLER

TRAVELLER
In a breath I left my words up in the air
There was no point in taking them everywhere
Sometimes I wanna be dumb
Say “No” and “Nothing’s come”
Leave my mouth outside my hidden mind

When I used to laugh I left it to the last
There was no way I’d hang around and stay
Sometimes I wish I’d choke
Watch my words go up in smoke
And take the burden off my restless eyes

Now I’m leaving here
But you know I really care
Now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now
I gotta tell you why I’m going there

Too late I wrote the tale of no return
I could not foresee there was nothing left to learn
Sometimes I wanna be small
Walking short and not so tall
And watch my words spread out across the sky

Now I’m leaving here
But you know I really care
Now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now
I gotta tell you why I’m going there

In a breath, I left my words up in the air
There was no point in taking them everywhere
Sometimes I wanna be dumb
Say “No” and “Nothing’s come”
Leave my mouth outside my hidden mind

Now I’m leaving here
But you know I really care
Now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now
I gotta tell you why I’m going there

Fun Facts:

  • Along with Prisoner, this song was going to be recorded by Pete and George before George went to Salford to study music at university.
  • As it happens, he stayed in Exeter and worked in Silent Running Studios for several years.
  • It is in the key of D.
  • Marc came up with the original guitar and bass parts in the verses.
  • Rowena wrote the lead line on the sax in the break between verses one and two.
  • George stole the guitar parts for the intro and the chorus from another song he wrote several years previously, about being sick when he was a child.
  • Traveller works great on both acoustic and electric guitar.
  • The lyrics were written by Pete after a conversation about songwriting with George’s girlfriend of the time.
  • She was also a songwriter and agreed to also write a song called Traveller.
  • As far as we know, she never did, but this is Pete’s version.
