FALLING DOWN

FALLING DOWN
I beat the anvil like a gong
The singing notes went ringing on
And the forge its heat is charged
With small worries made up large
And I feel I’m falling down into the sun
And I feel I’m falling down into the sun

I caught a ball, it was of stone
Made of bricks of my heart’s home
It was a weight I could not hold
Of all the mistakes I made of old
It bowled me over like a leaf inside the wind
It bowled me over like a leaf inside the wind

In this cage I made of life
I spend my sentence time inside
With the bars all made of days
With roads that are one-way
I know I’m wasting the time I should use to learn
I know I’m wasting the time I should use to learn

Very dark stars within my head
Deep space with them it is fed
So tired I am alone
Seeking streets of another home
And I can’t sleep for the dreaming fear in me
And I can’t sleep for the dreaming fear in me

Fun Facts:

  • This is a very simple song in the key of E, which uses A and B in the verse-adds.
  • The tempo is 78 BPM and the lyrics were written in January 2000.
  • Sven does some wonderful percussion work and Zak uses an unusual piece of electronics to modulate his guitar which he keeps deliberately simple to allow the lyrics to shine through.
  • How we giggled like silly children at the imagery in the ‘caught a ball’ verse.
  • Pete wanted to use the expression ‘dark star’ within a song as that was the original name of the band Dark Company.
  • Unfortunately there were at least 12 other bands in the UK alone that had registered that name and they were not even the only band in Devon with the name Dark Star, so they changed to Dark Company.
