CLOSE UP

Close Up by Dark Company, from the album Can of Worms.

CLOSE UP
You are my friend
I trust you once and then
There’s no room to turn around
Caught up I can’t back down
And I think I hear the echoes of your laugh
From where I am the story’s in two parts

You are my friend
With you my time I’d spend
Everybody sees us near
Our relationship seems clear
Yet I think I hear the echoes of your laugh
From where I am the story’s in two parts

You are my friend
I trust you once and then
There’s no room to turn around
Caught up I can’t back down
And I think I hear the echos of your laugh
From where I am the story’s in two parts

You are my friend
To you my heart I’d lend
But sometimes I’m blind
Your words leave me behind
I know I hear the echoes of your laugh
From where I am the story’s in two parts

Fun Facts:

  • This song is hard to pin down to any particular key.
  • This is an interesting piece of music because all the chords are minor – Am and Gm, then Em and Dm.
  • Close Up is another song that Pete wrote the lyrics for during the days of Alien Heat.
  • Alien Heat never attempted to develop the song at all.
  • George created a load of jazz/funk guitar parts for it that Pete didn’t like.
  • When Pete sang the vocal melody at the Wud Records studios, George played along and found that the song needed to go in a completely different direction to where it had been going before.
  • Cover Up had a rather silly chorus which was dropped.
  • There is a possibility of an instrumental version of the original jazz/funk track making an appearance sometime.
  • This was a song Pete wrote for his dear friend of many years, Terry.
