PHASE OUT

Phase Out by Dark Company, from the album Can of Worms.

PHASE OUT
Sitting in the shadow of a charity car
Learn to be a learner mustn’t jump too far
A golden age of solitude studded with regrets
Brittle-boned birdcage from a skeleton set
Jack Horner was a junkie with only one eye
Hubbard was a priest another motherless guy

Keep a candle burning on a slow-blow fuse
Learn to be a learner in the art of excuse
Plastic people buying zone littered with waste
Shock-block summerhouse with a garden centre taste
Cock Robin was a lover with a red feather heart
And Mary’s lamb was French-fried in a shower of sparks

It’s a storm warning
Black cones for Blind Pugh’s fate
Do the Treasure Island shuffle
While dancing Armageddon waits
Sell your rip-off repay shelter
The bomb’s gonna be too late

Standing in the queue for a quiz show prize
Learn to be a learner don’t come on too wise
Time child clock face with sand in a jar
Holiday apartments win a mythical car
Boy Blue’s a sex king with a string of cinemas
And God sells apples from Nell Gwynne’s cart

It’s a storm warning
Black cones for Blind Pugh’s fate
Do the Treasure Island shuffle
While dancing Armageddon waits
Sell your rip-off repay shelter
The bomb’s gonna be too late

It’s a storm warning
Black cones for Blind Pugh’s fate
Do the Treasure Island shuffle
While dancing Armageddon waits
Sell your rip-off repay shelter
The bomb’s gonna be too late
The bomb’s gonna be too late
The bomb’s gonna be too late
The bomb’s gonna be too late
The bomb’s gonna be too late
The bomb’s gonna be too late
The bomb’s gonna be too late
The bomb’s gonna be too late

Zak Black – guitar

Fun Facts:

  • This song is in the key of Dm.
  • Its original title was Stormwarning Skank.
  • The chorus has an extra beat or two which caused several tricky moments as the whole thing was sequenced at half tempo.
  • One of those tricky moments involved an assortment of count tracks that we made to try out various permutations of beats in the bar.
  • The combined result of all these spoken numbers was pure audio bonkerness.
  • This was one of the earliest Dark Company songs and was played a few times by Dark Company’s first incarnation with Rowena on sax, Simon on trumpet, Craig on keys, Jeff on bass and Ben on drums.
  • As yet we have not found a good recorded version in our archives, although we shall keep looking.
